Steven Spurrier was an English artist who was commissioned by Jonathan Cape to produce illustrations for Swallows and Amazons, the first book in the series. But Ransome did not like the illustrations which were not used except for the dust jacket and map. Later editions of Swallows and Amazons and Swallowdale had illustrations by Clifford Webb, but after Ransome himself illustrated Peter Duck and subsequent books, he drew new illustrations for the first two books also. But the Spurrier endpaper map of the lake is still used. See Steven Spurrier.
