When Denmark surrendered to the Third Reich in 1940, Great Britain invaded Iceland violating her neutrality. Britain recognized the local government, though, just keeping control of the military. In 1949, Britain de-occupied the the island keeping just a garrison outside Reykjavík. The garrison was retired in 1990.
