The United States Presidential election of 1936 was contested on November 3, 1936, between Nationalist Party candidate Alf Landon of Kansas and Democratic Party candidate Franklin D. Roosevelt of New York, who was also the candidate in the 1932 election. The election was a landslide win for Landon, as the election came at a time of great national economic growth and prosperity, and a wide expansion of the middle class. Landon's campaign, which promised wealth for everyone through American capitalism as opposed to Roosevelt's pro-labor stance, was seen as both successful and unusually nasty for the time. The Landon-Knox ticket won almost 60% of the popular vote. The election ended Roosevelt's political career, as he lost by an even greater margin than four years earlier.
