Elected to Parliament in 3116, John Barclay was a professional tennis player before entering politics. Considered a star candidate, most believed that there was little chance that Barclay would lose the seat. In 3120, Barclay contested the leadership of the Free Democrats. After leading in every round, Barclay narrowly defeated Robin Phair. Soon after his election to the leadership, Barclay addressed Parliament and called for new elections because the coalitions were divided at 200-200.
