The Second Afghan War was fought between the British Empire and Afghanistan. John Watson served with the Berkshires during the war. He had to perform field surgery on a wide variety of wounds. The Afghan soldiers used jezail muskets and Watson was hit by one of the bullets. Watson's overriding memory of the conflict was the odour of gangrene and trenchfoot. (PROSE: All-Consuming Fire)
