Iwo Jima is an island in the Japanese Volcano Islands which makes up the southern part of the Ogasawaran Islands. It is de jure part of Japan, although there are no permanent settlements on the island other than a handful of survivors from the Japanese military base on the island and their families. There was also an American military base on the island, which was home to a nuclear arsenal against the will of the Japanese. While it was not hit, almost all of the missiles were launched and it appears that the Americans on the island and some of the enraged Japanese descended into a war on the island which left only a handful of survivors, presumably in the dozens as reported by Hawaii and their colony Ogasawara.
