The first match of the 1992/1993 Premier League season, and the first-ever match in Premier League history, was held at Bramall Lane, Sheffield, on 15 August 1992. Within five minutes of the new league's existence, Brian Deane of the home side became its first-ever goalscorer. In the fiftieth minute, Deane scored a double with a penalty kick. Eleven minutes later, striker Mark Hughes scored Man U's only goal of the game, but not enough to emulate Deane's performance in this inaugural game and sealed their fate, with Sheffield United becoming the first-ever winners of a Premier League game. At the end of the 1992-93 season, they were fourteenth and Man U won the League.
