The bombing of the Aleksandrgrad subway occurred on September 11, 2001, meant to coincide with Premier Boris Molotov's visit to the Global Peace Conference in Boston and the leadup to the May 2002 elections and perpetrated by the AOK. The bombings in the Metro occurred on two trains and in three separate stations, with five suicide bombers carrying out the five individual attacks. 178 people were killed and 348 were injured in the attacks, which occurred during the evening rush hour. It was the deadliest attack in Alaska since the Aeroflot 177 bombing in 1988 and was the costliest. It was followed months later by the Sitka International Airport bombings on June 1, 2002, which was even more significant.
