Plates were originally cast iron and then later tended to be cast Brass as also used for name plates on steam locomotives, as more intricate shapes could be cast easier and serial numbers stamped in later on identical plates made in batches. Modern plates are metalic plastic films stuck on with special glue. These modern plates usually include a barcode for tracking by the manufacturer during production and through the supply chain by computerised systems.
