The first novel makes several differences: The opening is based on the original intro for the film; the killer murders Barry on the lakeside and pursues Claudette to the nearby boathouse, who then cuts their finger off before she is killed. Annie does not stop to talk to the dog. Ennis is more worried about Annie going to Crystal Lake and tries to convince her to come back to the town with him. Annie's chase scene is extended. She falls into a river before she is killed. Marcie thinks she sees a figure through the trees. It is later revealed that the figure was Crazy Ralph.
