In 2266 the Westmoreland was discovered adrift and her crew were all dead, with evidence that they had ripped each other apart with their bare hands. The investigators concluded that the crew had came down with a severe case of space cafard. The year of her recovery is based on the current stardate of 3475.3 (in 2267) given in the book, and McCoy's line saying the ship was found "last year".
