Bix was a man Roland Deschain and his ka-tet met after leaving the Emerald City at the River Whye. He is a ferryman, offering passage from one shore to another. He believes he is around 120 years old, however he has lost count as time is 'thin'. He owns a 'Z' shaped crank made by North Central Positronics which he used to help ferry people across the river.
