There are several hundred varieties of grape. The most common species of grape is Vitis vinifera and this is also the species with the most varieties. Nearly all of the major wine and table grape varieties are from this species, including Shiraz (Syrah), Merlot, the many varieties of Cabernet, Chardonnay, Semillon, etc. Other species of grape include Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia , Vitis rotundifolia , Vitis mustangensis and Vitis aestivalis. This final species is indigenous to North America, is known as the muscadine grape, and includes the wine grape variety known as Norton (or Cynthiana).
