Following the end of the American Civil War and the Treaty of Halifax, the founding fathers of the Confederate States of America needed to decide on a constitution and a form of government for the nation. Many proposed a government similar to the United States, however Robert E. Lee felt that the Confederate States should bear a different government and a different name from the United States. Lee and President Jefferson Davis soon proposed the idea of a monarch and a royal family to rule over the Confederate States along with the three other government branches.
