Matthew Martin was a detective with the Metropolis Police Department. When he attempted to investigate dirty cop Sam Phelan, Phelan killed Martin and framed Jonathan Kent for the crime in an attempt to blackmail Clark Kent into helping him steal an artifact from the museum.
