Æthelwulf, king of Wessex from 839 to 858, born to his father King Egbert. During the time of 825, his father defeated King Beornwulf of Mercia that ended Mercian dominance in all of England during the Anglo-Saxon times in the south of the Humber. Egbert sent his son, Æthelwulf with an army to Kent (Cent in Old English). This is when Æthelwulf had the Mercian sub-king exiled and Æthelwulf was appointed sub-king. After 830, Egbert had great relations with Mercia once again and the relations were passed on as friendly alliances when Æthelwulf was declared king in 839, being the first son to ever succeed his father was the West Saxon king since 641.
