1984 (ISBN 0451524934) is a fictional book about a totalitarian, dystopian world existing in the year 1984, which was penned by the writer George Orwell in 1949. The book is the story of Winston Smith and his entanglement in and rebellion against the totalitarian regime in which he lives. 1984 is known as one of the most widely known examples of a dystopia in literature. The term "Orwellian", which has come to describe anything that is dystopian, unfair, or somewhat fascist, even though Orwell was clearly against such societies, comes from the fact that Orwell wrote this book.
