The Florida Panthers made the playoffs for the first time since 2000, ending the NHL's longest postseason drought streak. The Los Angeles Kings became only the second eighth-seeded team to reach the Stanley Cup Finals, after the 2005–06 Edmonton Oilers, who lost the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals to the Carolina Hurricanes in seven games.
