During the midst of the storm, two Royal Carribean ships sunk, both of which were carrying 6,431 passengers. Blaike is the third deadliest cyclone in history, only behind Hurricane Mitch of 1998 and the San Calixto Hurricane of 1780. Blaike was a large-sized, slow moving hurricane, and formed only 89 miles from shore. because of record-breaking warm Gulf Stream, Blaike strengthened quickly before moving ashore.
