Sam Magee was a writer of westerns and Indiana Jones' favorite author of the genre. In 1913, Jones took a copy of Magee's Ten Bullets to Tombstone with him on a visit to the Russian Empire and a gunslinger's advice in the book helped Jones and his friend, Tamar Rustava, avoid being shot. Afterwards, Jones considered writing Magee a fan letter when he got home.
