This was the route Leareth used for his invasion of Valdemar. Using vast amounts of magical power, Herald-Mage Vanyel held the pass by himself until troops could arrive to secure it. After his death in that confrontation, Vanyel accepted the role of permanent guardian of the north, haunting the Forest of Shadows and stopping anything that came through the pass with harmful intent.
