13 January 1887-20 January 1963 Born in Plumstead, worked as a railway porter but in 1905 enlisted as a private in the South Lancashire Regiment for 12 years. Served in India throughout WWI. From 1918 living in Southwark. 1943-44 Mayor of the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark
