Carl Friedrich Gauss was a German mathematician and scientist who contributed to a number of fields, including magnetism. He pioneered the principle of magnetic induction, the basic principle behind much of the UNSC's weaponry, including MAC cannons. Some such weapons are named after him, for example the M68 Gauss Cannon and the M555 Gauss Cannon.
