Buck Herzog was the geologist in the crew of the Ares III. He felt useless during the voyage, as he was millions of miles away from any rocks, and feared that his less important position in a third expedition would be too obscure to make it into the history books. Herzog was a baseball fan from California, and had once seen Fernando Valenzuela play.
