Louis Charles Napoleon Bonaparte (1813-1863) reigned as Emperor Louis I of the French Empire from 1845, when he overthrew his brother Napoleon II in the War of Napoleonic Succession, until 1863, when he died of intestinal cancer. Louis I is credited with reigning during a period of integration of the Empire's diverse provinces, of curbing the power of the military, tripling the size of the national railroad system, and helping foster the Industrial Revolution on the European continent. The last six years of his reign are regarded as being part of the Golden Age of the French Empire, and the peace that followed the War of Napoleonic Succession and lasted until the Colonial Wars is referred to as the "Peace of Louis" (as an alternative to the Pax Francia)
