After Kiev was destroyed with an atomic bomb on March 4, 1951, Vasilkov took over that city's administrative functions. In June, 1951, Ihor Shevchenko was taken by the MGB to a Red Army recruiting station in Vasilkov, where he was informed that he'd be kitted out and sent to the fighting in Europe the following day.
