Alope was a beautiful woman who was the daughter of Kerkyon. Alope was seduced by Poseidon who took the form of a kingfisher. Through their union Alope bore Hippothoon. Alope left the infant to die but it was suckled by a mare and then found by shepherds. The shepherds got into a dispute regarding who was to have the beautiful royal attire of the boy. The case was taken before Kerkyon who recognized Hippothoon and ordered Alope be put to death.
