The 2017 Atlantic hurricane season became the second-most active Atlantic hurricane season on record, only behind 2005 in terms of named storms and hurricanes, but it had more major hurricanes; a record number of eight. With the continued strengthening of the La NiƱa event from 2016, activity was even higher than the previous season. The season was responsible for 26 tropical cyclones; of which 22 became named storms, 13 became hurricanes, and a record-breaking eight became major hurricanes - a number never before seen in the Atlantic. Most tropical cyclones in this season had devastating effects on land, with the southeastern continental United States and Caribbean Islands taking devastating hits from many of the historic storms.
