Diana, Princess of Wales (Diana Frances Spencer; 1 July 1961 – 31 August 1997) was the first wife of Charles, Prince of Wales, heir to the British Crown. They were married in 1981 and divorced in 1996. Diana had two sons, Princes William and Harry. William is in the direct line to the thrones of the United Kingdom and 15 other Commonwealth Realms. Diana was killed in a car accident in Paris on 31 August 1997. The circumstances which led to that accident have been subject to much controversy and speculation.
