Henry D. Gamble was born in Manchester, England in 1874, the son of a businessman and a seamstress. Interested in the wine industry, he came to southern France (around 1900) to work in wineries. After hearing of Occitania's reputation as a tax haven, he moved to Bealieu and started his own winery, Gamble Wines. As Occitania's only wine, Gamble's had a reputation for being "the smallest winery on the smallest country". Since the 1920s Gamble wines are among the most expensive in the world. He died in 1941.
