Smyrna was an ancient Greek city on the Anatolia peninsula, part of Turkey today. It is now known as İzmir by Turkey. Mr. Tapling stated to Hornblower that he recognized the symptoms of Black Death in Duras as he had seen it in Smyrna back in 1796.
