Al-Hassan was a political renegade in his home country of Yemen, but he turned his fortunes around in the mid-eighties when his forces seized control of the government in the capital city Sana'a. The new Yemeni Liberation Authority (YLA) murdered the ruling family and allowed for Al-Hassan to take control in the city's Taherir Palace.
