The primary purpose of red-blood cells is to transport oxygen around the body. Red blood cells contain a red-coloured protein called "haemoglobin", and this protein is able to carry molecules of oxygen. The oxygen is attached to the haemoglobin in the lungs. When red blood cells are squeezed in capillaries the oxygen is released into the body tissues. Upon losing their oxygen, red blood cells have a bluish colour.
