Merkus was a Cretan from a village near Athens. He was especially bigoted towards Centaurs and those who associated with them. He and a group of fellow Cretans burned down Deric's home. Merkus knocked Lyla unconscious and left her inside where she burned to death. He later attacked Deric and Deric killed him in self-defense.
