This is Janis' first solo album after she left Big Brother & the Holding Company. It was released shortly after the Woodstock festival. The re-issue from 1999 contains three bonus tracks at the end of the original album. Two of them - "Summertime" and "Piece of My Heart" - were recorded at Woodstock. The Woodstock Experience, which again expands the album, finally offers the complete festival performance of Janis Joplin on a second disc.
