Dr. Steiner was a Coroner who first appeared in the episode The Scarlet Letter and later reappeared in the episodes Red Herring and The Red Mile. In The Red Mile, Patrick Jane found out Steiner was going to be working on the case and went over to give him some trouble. He played a prank that ended up with Steiner discovering a note placed on the body predicting Steiner's confusion about how the note got there when Jane was not seen touching the body. Jane also discovers that Steiner is sick and allows him to participate in their investigation so that he could feel useful. At the end, Steiner reveals to Jane that he knew what his disease was going to do to him and he didn't want to have to go through that so he was going to kill himself.
