The 1977–78 Chicago Black Hawks season was the Hawks' fifty-second season in the NHL, and the club was coming off a 26-43-11 record, earning 63 points, which was their lowest total since the 1957-58 season. The Hawks managed to qualify for the playoffs, as they finished in third place in the Smythe Division.
