The Siege of Leningrad was the deadliest siege in history, with over a million civilians dead. Almost all of communication with the Soviet Union and Leningrad (Saint Petersburg today) was severed, and food was desperately short. Two efforts by Soviet forces to relieve the city had failed. But in January 1944, the siege had been lifted.
