In the 2002 film, Fernand Mondego is again the main antagonist. He is portrayed by Guy Pearce. Mondego was once a friend of Dantes before he betrayed him, but Dantes eventually becomes the Count of Monte Cristo and returns to face Mondego. The pair engage in a sword fight which culminates in Dantes stabbing and killing Mondego.
