The United States Congressional elections of 2008 were held on November 4, 2008 in concurrence with the Presidential election and gubernatorial elections in 14 states. 33 Senate seats and 505 seats in the House of Representatives were contested. Benefiting from the coattails of the landslide reelection of President Jay Leno, Democrats gained 22 seats in the House to place them at 224 seats to the 271 controlled by the National Party, and gained four Senate seats to take a 51-49 advantage. Concurrently, the Democrats defended all of their gubernatorial seats up for election and gained one (Nova Scotia).
