London North East was a constituency that elected a single Member of the European Parliament (MEP). It was created in 1979 and abolished in 1999 when it was replaced by the multi-member London constituency. It was created in 1979 and abolished in 1999 when it was replaced by the multi-member London constituency. The European constituency was formed by the grouping of ten parliamentary constituencies used for the elections of members of the UK House of Commons: Bethnal Green and Bow, Chingford, Hackney Central, Hackney North and Stoke Newington, Hackney South and Shoreditch, Leyton, Newham North West, Newham South, Stepney and Poplar and Walthamstow. United Kingdom Parliamentary constituencies were redrawn in 1983 and the European constituencies were altered to reflect this. The new seat comprised the following Westminster constituencies: Bethnal Green and Stepney, Chingford, Hackney North and Stoke Newington, Hackney South and Shoreditch, Leyton, Newham North West, Newham South and Walthamstow. The same boundaries were used in 1984, 1989 and 1994. The seat was won by Alfred Lomas of the Labour Party at the first election in 1979. Lomas held the seat until its abolition in 1999.
