n8:abstract
A staff of sorcery is a part of a mage's everyday accessory, used to perform magical feats, and without which only limited magic is possible. They are used as both tools and weapons. The staff is presented to a mage upon reaching the rank of Master. A staff of sorcery is made by a magesmith. The physical staff itself can be handcrafted from virtually any kind of wood, but some types of wood are more capable of sustaining magic (e.g. holly, yew, ebony, vinewood, etc.), and are prefered. Usually the prospective master is responsible for searching out and crafting the wooden staff on his own, before presenting it to the magesmith for preparation. The magesmith then performs several secret magical rituals on the staff, creating a magical focus out of the staff. The staves are "customized" for each mage. A staff is generally considered personal for a mage. However, staves belonging to other mages can be used to a comparatively less potent effect. Staves are capable of changing owners. When a mage is defeated, or if their staff is forcibly taken from them in a fight (a form of defeat), the staff will change its allegiance to the one who defeated its previous master and work perfectly well with its new master. It is unclear if the staff will continue to work properly for its original master if it is returned (not taken back in a fight).
