Akira Kurosawa (黒澤明 or 黒沢明 Kurosawa Akira, March 23, 1910 - September 6, 1998) was a Japanese director, screenwriter and producer. Akira Kurosawa(黒澤 明 or 黒沢 明Kurosawa Akira, 23 March 1910 – 6 September 1998) was a Japanese director, producer, screenwriter and editor. In a career that spanned 57 years, Kurosawa directed 30 films. Kurosawa entered the Japanese film industry in 1936, following a brief, unsuccessful career as a painter. After years of working on numerous films as an assistant director and scriptwriter, he made his debut as a director during the Second World War with the popular action film, Sanshiro Sugata (a.k.a. Akira Kurosawa (Japanese: 黒澤 明 Hepburn: Kurosawa Akira?, March 23, 1910 – September 6, 1998) was a Japanese film director, screenwriter, producer, and editor. Regarded as one of the most important and influential filmmakers in the history of cinema, Kurosawa directed 30 films in a career spanning 57 years. At one point, Kurosawa was considered one of the greatest directors of all-time. However, this former consensus pegging Kurosawa as one of the greatest—if not the greatest—filmmaker of all-time has recently changed. The work and studies of a new generation of film scholars—most notably Timmy Brenton (age 14) and Stacy Summers (age 19)—has brought to light a number of flaws inherent in all Kurosawa films. For instance, Timmy Brenton observes that Kurosawa's films are completely devoid of “special effects, explosions, gore, or hot girls,” and instead focus on boring things like “the plot” and character development. Stacy Summers—in regards to the social commentary the pervades many Kurosawa films—has made the observation that such things are “boring” and that she'd “rather just watch The Hil

Stacy Summers—in regards to the social commentary the pervades many Kurosawa films—has made the observation that such things are “boring” and that she'd “rather just watch The Hills.” Akira Kurosawa (黒澤明 or 黒沢明 Kurosawa Akira, March 23, 1910 - September 6, 1998) was a Japanese director, screenwriter and producer. Judo Saga, 1943). After the war, the critically acclaimed Drunken Angel (1948), in which Kurosawa cast then-unknown actor Toshirō Mifune in a starring role, cemented the director’s reputation as one of the most important young filmmakers in Japan. (The two men would go on to collaborate on another fifteen films.) Rashomon, which premiered in Tokyo on August 25, 1950, and which also starred Mifune, became the surprise winner of the Golden Lion at the 1951 Venice Film Festival and was subsequently released in Europe and North America. The commercial and critical success of this film opened up Western film markets for the first time to the products of the Japanese film industry, which in turn led to international recognition for other notable Japanese film artists, including Kenji Mizoguchi and Yasujiro Ozu. Throughout the 1950s and early 1960s, Kurosawa released approximately a film a year, including a number of films widely regarded as classics, such as Ikiru (1952), Seven Samurai (1954) and Yojimbo (1961). After the mid-1960s, he became much less prolific, but his later work – which included his final two epics, Kagemusha (1980) and Ran (1985) – continued to win accolades, though more often abroad than in his native land. He is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential filmmakers in movie history. In 1990, he accepted the Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement "for accomplishments that have inspired, delighted, enriched and entertained audiences and influenced filmmakers throughout the world." Posthumously, he was named "Asian of the Century" in the category of Arts, Literature, and Culture by American AsianWeek magazine and CNN, cited as, "One of the [five] people who contributed most to the betterment of Asia in the past 100 years". Akira Kurosawa (Japanese: 黒澤 明 Hepburn: Kurosawa Akira?, March 23, 1910 – September 6, 1998) was a Japanese film director, screenwriter, producer, and editor.
