In Call of Duty 2: Big Red One, the player takes the role of gunner on a Liberator. In the level the player is bombing over the coast of North Africa, at first fending off aircraft such as the Messerschmitt BF109, Focke Wulf 190 and even a flight of Me 323 "Gigant" cargo planes. During the mission the player also serves as a bombardier, dropping bombs on a railway line and a Kriegsmarine fleet. The B-24 Liberator was an American heavy bomber used by the allied forces during World War II. It was created by Consolidated Aircraft. While trapped in 1942, Pavel Chekov led a squadron of Russian Yakovlev YAK-1 fighters to escort a B-24 Liberator piloted by John Kirk to Sweden where the Royal Air Force would be waiting for them. Kirk's B-24 was carrying the American diplomat Averell Harriman who needed to reach London.
