n11:abstract
The Unforgivable Curses, as observed in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, are the most powerful Dark Arts spells known. They are so named because they are forbidden and unforgivable to use without Ministry of Magic permission. Getting caught using one results in the perpetrator spending the rest of their life in Azkaban. As the spells are very strong, their use requires a strong desire to bring about the effects, a directed will, and no small amount of skill. The Curses are most often used by villains such as Voldemort and the Death Eaters. However, in the final few books of the series, many of the protagonists use the Curses openly and without consequence against antagonists. This is due both to the Ministry's tendency to lift the restrictions during wartime, and because Voldemort ruled the Ministry for a time during the final book. The Unforgivable Curses are three of the most powerful and sinister spells known to the wizarding world. They are tools of the Dark Arts and were first classified as "Unforgivable" in 1717, with the strictest penalties attached to their use. The three curses consist of the Killing Curse (Avada Kedavra), Cruciatus Curse (Crucio), and Imperius Curse (Imperio). By the 1990s, using any of these three curses on another human being, Muggle or wizard, would result in a life sentence to Azkaban, unless there was sufficient evidence that the caster did so under the influence of the Imperius Curse. Aurors were permitted to use them during the First Wizarding War, and during the height of the Second Wizarding War under Lord Voldemort's regime, the curses were made legal, though this was presumably repealed following Voldemort's demise. The Unforgivable Curses are three of the most powerful and sinister spells known to the wizarding world in Harry Potter series. They are tools of the Dark Arts and were first classified as "Unforgivable" in 1717. The three curses consist of the Killing Curse (Avada Kedavra), Cruciatus Curse (Crucio), and Imperius Curse (Imperio). The three Unforgivable Curses are the Killing Curse, the Cruciatus Curse and the Imperius Curse. Use of these Curses is heavily punishable by wizarding law.
