rdfs:comment
On 9 August 2008 Rovers played their opening league game of the 2008-09 season. The match was against Carlisle United, who Rovers had beaten 3-0 when the sides last met in December 2007. The Rovers squad featured three new recruits in Darryl Duffy and Jeff Hughes who both started the game, and Ben Hunt who was on the bench. The Carlisle lineup, managed by ex-Rovers manager John Ward, featured goalkeeper Ben Williams, who scored an own goal last time he faced Rovers when playing for Crewe Alexandra. His o.g. gifted Rovers a point in a 1-1 draw at Alexandra Stadium the previous season.

Rovers took an early lead in the game, when Rickie Lambert headed in a Craig Disley cross after 15 minutes. The lead was short-lived however with Carlisle equalising through Danny Carlton four minutes later. Carlisle scored their second on the stroke of half time, Marc Bridge-Wilkinson giving them a 2-1 lead at the break. Carlton scored his second of the game in the 80th minute before Andy Williams scored an injury time consolation goal, sealing a 3-2 victory for the Cumbrians.
