The Race::1972 Midwest 300 was an ASA National Tour event held at Track::Salem Speedway on November 5, 1972. It was the first race in the history of the ASA National Tour and, despite the '72 date, served as the 1973 season opener. Darrell Waltrip went down as the first winner in series history, holding off Larry Moore. Dave Sorg, who would go onto win the inaugural championship, started his season off with a 5th place finish.
