He took over from Geoff Dunford on 2 April 2007, the day after the club played in the final of the LDV Vans Trophy at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, and stepped down from the position on 4 August 2008 to be replaced by Nick Higgs. Prior to his appointment as chairman, Ron had been on the board of the football club since the mid-1980s, and retained a seat on the board following the end of his spell in charge.

Prior to his appointment as chairman, Ron had been on the board of the football club since the mid-1980s, and retained a seat on the board following the end of his spell in charge. If February 2009, Ron suffered a heart attack, and spent some time in intensive care. He recovered enough to return to the Memorial Stadium later in the year, but he died on 30 November 2009 following a short illness.
