In 1968, Delano began a career in improvisational comedy alongside Sid Caesar, and the two have performed together on stage and on television around the world. Delano also has a few dramatic pieces to his credit, including Report to the Commissioner (1975, with "A Piece of the Action" co-star Vic Tayback) and Executive Action (1973, with Gilbert Green, John Anderson, Paul Sorenson, Ed Lauter, Dick Miller and Paul Carr). He also appeared in the made-for-TV movies Blood Sport (1973, with William Lucking and Craig Richard Nelson), Lucy Gets Lucky (1975, with Lucille Ball, Joan Swift, Dean Martin, and "A Piece of the Action" co-star Jay Jones), and In the Glitter Palace (1977, with Salome Jens, Robert Sampson, Stanley Kamel, Booth Colman and Anthony Zerbe), and has appeared in episodes of Mission: Impossible, Charlie's Angels, and Taxi (with Christopher Lloyd). Along with Jack Donner, Delano founded the Oxford Theater in Los Angeles, which also served as an acting school. Their students included Don Johnson, Craig T. Nelson and Barry Levinson.
