These can be true life savers in the early game - Darkness can be used to shake off pursuit from a monster, especially if cast in the area the stairs are located. Many monsters have problems fighting in darkness, and can be easily slaughtered. This includes vortices and doppelganger kings. The greatest obstacle to using them is realizing you have one when a hairy situation occurs. If a large number of them is obtained, they can be of use when raiding the Water Dragon Cave.
